All Centurion Lounges are “day of departure” lounges. Cardmembers with boarding passes for flights that have just landed will not be admitted, though those with layovers or connecting flights who produce proof of a connecting flight will be admitted.
Cardmembers will not be admitted more than 3 hours before the departure time on their same-day, confirmed boarding pass (this does not apply to connecting flights).
Children under 2 years old will be admitted free of charge if the accompanying parent/guardian can provide a “lap infant” boarding pass or proof of age.
Recent changes to the guest policy have certainly made it difficult for families of 4 or more to access a Centurion Lounge.
Currently, if you’re a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children) with only 1 Amex Platinum cardholder, you will pay $110; families of 5 will pay $140; 6 will pay $170, and so on.
If you’re planning to visit a Centurion Lounge often, it could make sense to add an authorized user to your Amex Platinum card.
American Express charges a fee of $195 (rates and fees) per additional Amex Platinum card. In many cases, if you’re a larger family and your travels involve your partner and children, it makes sense to add your partner as an authorized cardholder.
Those who don’t travel with a partner but still travel with children should note that American Express sets the age limit for authorized cardholders at 13 years old. Therefore, if you have a teenager or an adult child you often travel with, it may be worth adding them as an authorized cardholder.
Adding an authorized user/cardholder makes sense for you if your family would access a Centurion Lounge 4+ times. You’ll still have to pay for any children over 2 to enter, but it will be cheaper for a second adult as an authorized user versus paying $50 each visit.
Adding a cardholder to your account is not a decision that should be made lightly, as their card is subject to the same terms/agreement your card is subject to.
This means American Express holds you responsible for all of the purchases made by the authorized cardholder, and they reserve the right to report any authorized cardholder’s use of your account to credit reporting agencies, among other agreed-upon terms and conditions.
If you’re adding an authorized cardholder to your account, you’ll want to be sure they’re acting responsibly.
While there are currently only 13 Centurion Lounges in the U.S., there are 3 more scheduled to open in the next year or so, and 14 international locations.
If you’re a frequent traveler, signing up for a credit card like the Amex Platinum card can offer a ton of value. Can I use the Centurion Club while traveling using my flight benefits with a confirmed seat? I’m a United Airlines employee and AX Platinum card holder. I spend well over $25k per year on my card as well as pay the $500 annual fee.

Hi Christina,
As long as you have a same day boarding pass, you can access the Centurion lounge. If you forget your Platinum card at home, you can have them look it up via the last 4 of your SSN and some verification questions. They do not care which airlines you fly with. I’ve personally flown on Spirit, and literally nobody bats an eye. That’s the great thing about not being associated with a specific airline! Thanks for reading!

Hi Donna, unfortunately when Amex tightened their restrictions in 2017 in attempts to battle overcrowding issues they imposed the strict 2 guest limit for those with a Platinum Card.
In March of this year, they’re updating those restrictions to state “We will admit children under 2 years of age free of charge, provided an accompanying parent or guardian is able to produce a “lap infant” boarding pass or proof of age.” Unfortunately, this won’t apply to your 8 & 10 yr old children.
However, there is an alternative to this which you could be interested in depending on how often you would want to utilize the lounge. If you plan to use the lounge more than once a year, it may be worth paying a $175 fee (current at the time of answering this comment) for another member of your family (limited to individuals 13 yrs & older) to get an “Authorized User” card. This fee actually covers up to three additional cards.
Again, if you travel fairly often and will use a centurion lounge two or more times, it may be worth adding your wife as an authorized user for the $175 fee as she will then also be allowed 2 guests, which means as a family of 5 you should be taken care of. Hope this helps!!!

The updated policy states “Guest access is per CARD MEMBER, not per Card.” So, the authorized user could gain access for themselves only. You’re all set for a traditional family of four, however for families of five, six etc each child (13+) would need their own “authorized user” cards. I’ve quoted the updated guest policy taken from the Centurion Lounge website below:

What is the guest policy?
Platinum® Card members who receive complimentary access may enter with up to two guests at no additional charge.
Centurion members may enter with up to two guests or immediate family (spouse or domestic partner, and children under 18) at no additional charge.
Guest access is per Card Member, not per Card. Family or guests may not enter or remain in the lounge unless accompanied in the lounge by the Card Member. No more than two guests per day will receive admittance to the lounge at no additional charge. For example, a Card Member who enters the lounge with two guests at no additional charge, and then leaves the lounge with those guests, and then returns to the lounge on the same day with two different guests will need to purchase day-passes for those two different guests.
Platinum Card and Centurion Members may purchase a day-pass for any additional guests for $50 USD at the time of entry. The $50 one-day pass for additional guests is valid at any location of The Centurion Lounge on the same day, as long as the guest is still accompanied by the Card Member.

I just confirmed with AMEX — Everyone with a card in their name can bring two guests. For a personal AMEX card, it is $175 for up to three additional cards. (This is all according to customer service.)
Unfortunately for me, I have a business Platty and the cost is $300 per person! Yikes!

Hi Michael, just an update here – UP has had three separate staff members call into the Platinum Card’s customer service center and we have all received the same confirmation:
Guest access is, indeed, per cardholder NOT per card member. This means each authorized user or cardholder is allowed two guests. So, a family of 5 or 6 could utilize the lounge at no additional lounge fees if they have two cardholders present (allowed two guests each).
Again, this was confirmed multiple times by member services upon calling in to request the most up-to-date info.

I find it difficult to accept a reduction in benefits without an accompanying reduction in price. When you first opened the rules were more liberal and you convinced more people to take the card. The people who put the lounge program together should have done a better job of evaluating the potential card holder access requirements and sizing the lounges a accordingly. Of course it’s easier to take a benefit away from your customer instead of biting the bullet and fixing the problem, but beware of the backlash.

The 3-hour policy makes sense when someone is flying from their home airport when someone has options. Late in the day when away from the home airport you’ve checked out of your hotel, finished the last meeting of the day and want to go to the airport to use the lounge to clean up last items from work, take a shower, etc. Not to let someone into the lounge, in this case, is not a good policy for us who travel. Should consider making modifications for the time of day for away airports.

“To use the Centurion Lounge, the policy requires you to have a confirmed seat assignment. So, on your standby boarding pass, a confirmation you are flying that day would be required (confirmation you had a seat and weren’t perpetually waiting for one). Many airline employees purchase revenue tickets in order to be able to access the lounge or do not fly standby due to this reason.”

Sadly, the Centurion Suite at the Barclays Center closed a few years ago, though American Express does still have a dedicated entrance to the arena. Other than that the only Centurion Suite still remaining that I am aware of is the Crypto.com Arena (formerly the Staples Center) in Los Angeles.

I see that commencing March, 2023 my Platinum Card will no longer permit free access; there will be a charge of $50 per person. The airports I typically use do not have Centurion lounges, but maybe once or twice a year we go through an airport that has one. If we remember, we stop by for a snack. It is a nice amenity to the card. Other than “points”, it is probably the only amenity I use, and I can “points” elsewhere. If AMEX wanted to make a change, why not limit the number of “free” visits per year per card (5, 7, etc.)?
Fifty dollars per person is a ripoff when considering what I pay for the card for me, my wife and kids. AT $50 per person, AMEX is making a substantial profit !!! When my card renews, I can have a very nice meal for $50 in any airport instead of paying $50 for nothing more than self service “snacks”. When my card renews, it will be goodbye to AMEX.

Hi. Recently my husband who is an authorized user on my American Express Platinum card was refused entry into Escape Lounge Studio Partners at PBI International Airport. He was traveling from PBI to EWR. He had on his person the American Express Platinum plus a confirmed seat assignment for traveling on same day. He called to speak with a supervisor who advised him unable to use. Per the information I have obtained he should never have been refused entry. Can you please clarify has to why refusal into lounge.
